Teenage Manchester United striker Frederico Macheda was robbed in his own home by a masked gang on Sunday. Two thugs smashed their way into his house in Sale at 3.40am and took money and jewellery from the 17-year-old Italian and one of his friends. His friend was hit over the head with a bottle and had to have hospital treatment for minor cuts. Unconfirmed reports say the attack may have been linked to an incident earlier in the evening when Macheda, a former Lazio youth player, was involved in an altercation outside a private members’ club in Manchester. Macheda, who turns 18 next month, had been enjoying a night out at the exclusive Circle Bar in the city centre. As he left he was said to have been involved in a heated exchange with several other men, before getting a taxi back to his home. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Two men stole cash and jewellery from the victims before running out of the house. ‘One man suffered a minor cut to his head in the robbery. Inquiries are ongoing.’ The teenager hit the headlines in April after scoring the injury time winner in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa after coming on as a late substitute. He is due to fly to the Far East with his team mates to as part of the club’s pre-season training. He is the latest in a string of Premier League footballers who have been the victims of robberies in recent years. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard’s wife, Alex Curran, was targeted, while England striker Emile Heskey also had armed raiders at his home. Former England striker Darius Vassell and Jermaine Pennant have also been the victims of robberies.
