The Dikhu Hydro Project has evoked mixed response from various quarters, with six villages under Longleng district sharply opposed to the project, while the villages under Mon district including Wanching and Chingphoi have urged the government to intervene into the matter and direct the department to begin the project as scheduled. The village leaders of Wanching and Chingpoi, in a representation to state chief minister, asserted that if the planned 140 Megawatt project with 98 meters high reservoir dam and another formidable diversion dam 261 meter high is erected, a large portion of forest and agricultural land of Wanching and Chingpoi villages would be submerged under water. However, they felt that government’s initiative in taking up the hydro power project in Dikhu river was fulfillment of a long felt need. The village leaders said the project would not only benefit villages in the Dikhu catchments but the state and the country at large, especially when the whole country was facing acute power shortage. They said villages situated in Dikhu catchments include Wanching, Chingphoi, Chingdang, Wakching, Kongan and Naginimora town. Stating that investigations for feasibility conducted by different agencies have shown that large portion of lands would be submerged along the Dikhu catchments, the representation, however, advocated that compensation has to be made by the government to the affected villages in both Mon and Longleng districts.
