Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) has asked the Meghalaya government to refer all rape cases to fast track courts to ensure that perpetrators of the crime are brought to justice without any delay. In a statement release issued here, the Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) commended the fast track court that recently sentenced nine rapists to ten-year imprisonment but expressed dismay at the time taken for transfer of the case to the fast track court. “Rape cases should be immediately transferred to fast track courts so that the victims get justice fast. The delay in trial of rapists only leads to harassment to victims and can sometimes even weaken the cases. Rapists should not be granted bail simply because they have influence and money,” CSWO said. “It would be helpful if rape victims receive compensation from the government as the trauma that they go through is a suffering in itself,” the women’s NGO said.
