Zeliang stresses on development

Minister for planning and co-ordination, veterinary and animal husbandry, T.R Zeliang graced the 63rd Independence Day celebration in Dimapur as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering at DDSC Stadium, the chief guest called upon everyone to salute the brave jawans who made the ultimate sacrifice for the unity and integrity of the nation. Commenting on the development front, he said the success the ‘Year of Capacity Building’ had prompted the state government to extend it to 2009-10 as it had a tremendous positive impact in creation of awareness, enhancement of knowledge, sensitization of issues, change of attitudes, skill development and upgradation. On agriculture, the minister said that the state agricultural policy envisaged globally competitive food grain for all by 2020 but regretted that the sector was facing a grave situation of failed crops and poor yield due to delayed rainfall and rodent menace for which the department had launched extensive rodent control programme, imparting training and distribution of seeds. District level and state level task forces have also been set up to make indepth studies and work out action plans, he said. Zeliang said the department had adopted a hi-tech method of cultivation and that the Agricultural Technology Management Agency was facilitating an integrated broad based extensive system covering all aspects. Under the Integrated Livestock Development project the government was trying to promote back yard farming to achieve self sufficiency in livestock production. Earlier, the chief guest unfurled the national flag and later took the salute from the marching contingents. He also inaugurated the exhibition stalls.
