Former AGP legislator Dalim Roy was arrested in Dhubri on charges of dishonoring the Tricolour. Sources said Roy, a former MLA from Golokganj Legislative Assembly constituency, on learning that someone had unfurled the national flag on his (disputed) land by National Highway 31 at Halakura, rushed to the spot and uprooted the pole with the Tricolour and threw it into a pond. Roy was later brought to Dhubri and produced before a judicial magistrate and sent to jail. Assistant superintendent of police Hitesh Chandra Roy said he was booked for dishonouring the Tricolour and if convicted, could face three years in prison. Independence Day in the rest of the Northeast passed off peacefully though some states were affected by a joint general strike called by several militant outfits.
