Legal awareness seminar for women

A joint meeting of the State Commission for Women and various departments and NGOs with state chief secretary on Tuesday resulted with a decision to organize a state level seminar on “Legal Rights of Women” soon to create legal awareness among women in the state. State chief secretary Lalthara convened the meeting following the directive from the National Commission for Women on addressing the alarming rise in crime against women. The State Women Commission, representatives of various departments including police, law department, women developments and NBCC women department and NMA took part in the meeting which was held at the chief secretary conference hall. As per the directive of the National Commission for Women, issues such as setting up of fast track court to deliver speedy justice to the victims and provide exemplary punishment to the culprits and the need for police, judiciary, civil societies and media to work hand in hand were discussed in the meeting. The meeting also discussed on the report on rape cases against women in the state which was tabled in the floor of the house and also the follow up actions during which the state women commission was learnt to have suggested for specifically assigning a police officer to handle such cases. On the other hand, the meeting was also learnt to have discussed on the inquiry report and recommendations on the rape cases in Dimapur and Zunheboto which was submitted by the Nagaland Women Commission earlier and the action taken so far. The meeting further discussed on the need for the state government to provide immediate relief and rehabilitation to victims of rape and domestic violence.
