The main hostel building of Isaiah Ability School (IAS), a boarding high school in Vungoju Colony, Wokha town was totally destroyed by fire in the early hours of morning Tuesday. The fire which started around 6:30 am in the morning raged till around 9 am and completely destroyed the building. Sources said fire services arrived but they were rendered helpless as the raging fire was in its last stages. It was also reported that 33 hostellers and 3 teachers were inside the hostel when the fire broke out. Apparently, the fire started due to bursting of a gas cylinder in the mini kitchen downstairs which spread up onto the main hostel building above. Sources said the incident occurred while changing of the regulator. The school belongs to former NSF president, NSN Lotha. Cash amounting to 4 lakhs and eighty thousand rupees, furniture items, entertainment items like TV, DVD, inverter, fridge, steel cupboards, clothing and stationary items of students, and original academic documents of teachers were lost in the fire. However, the cumulative record books of the students were saved. In an inspiring act of bravery, a class five girl student Nsungbeni Lotha was injured while trying to stop the fire from spreading. Consequently, the heat of the fire caught her and she sustained minor injuries. She is reportedly being taken care of at Civil Hospital, Wokha. School authorities later told Nagaland Post that soon after the tragedy, Wokha Town Council donated cash amounting Rs. 9520/- as a relief. Clothing, ration items and books for students were also distributed by DC Wokha, Wokha Branch Red Cross Society, Wokha Chambers of Commerce, and DIS Wokha.
