A Meghalaya police constable, guarding the high-security Israel embassy at Aurangzeb road in New Delhi has been suspended for firing several rounds in the air out his anger. Constable Vikram Lama, one of the 500 personnel of the 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion is upset for his deployment in the national capital due to ill-treatment meted out by his higher authorities. The 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion falls under the India Reserve Police Battalion (IRBn) and is now deployed in New Delhi replacing Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary. Officiating Meghalaya Police Chief B Kezo said that he had ordered for a detailed report into the Wednesday’s incident. Early this week, constable Lama, now placed under suspension allegedly fired from his SLR without any provocation to vent his anger against his higher authorities. Ever since their deployment at the national capital last year, the personnel of 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion had been complaining about lack of facilities like hygienic living quarters and adequate food and other basic requirements. These personnel have made repeated requests to the authorities to address their grievances but to no avail. Earlier, a senior police official had said, jawans were not provided adequate accommodation and proper food. “They have no proper place to sleep. We sleep on the verandah and terrace of the police station. Three to four persons have to share one bed,” the police official said.
