Out rightly condemning the “stinging attack” made against the businessmen in Dimapur by the deputy commissioner, Maongwati Aier for “so called extortion” from public by charging extra rate on various essential commodities, the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce (DCC) and its subsidiaries has demanded unconditional apology from him failing which it would take its own course of action. DCC president, Kasheto Sema in a statement termed the remark as “most unfortunate” that the head of the district administration could be “so irresponsible and reckless” in making a public statement by terming the business community of his own district as extortionist. The DCC pointed out that the prices of essential commodities were being fixed by the DMC under consultation with the administration and that other category of goods were sold in the market within the printed price structure. It therefore said that the question of extortion from public by businessmen did not arise. The DCC also pointed out that in spite of rampant extortions, kidnapping, chakka bandh and all other forms of prevailing anti –social atrocities on business community, the traders had always been co-operative to the administration. It also said that the businessmen had been bearing the burden of all additional expenses meted upon them by means of the mentioned anti-social activities. “Shall we not ask the DC whether he has been sleeping all the time when the business community has been suffering? Is he not putting the blame of his failure on the business Community?” the DCC questioned.
