DC Dimapur Maong Aier has said his speech at the Dimapur GBs meeting on August 21 was made in the context of those businessmen who fleeced public by charging above rates fixed by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and the district administration. He stated this while drawing attention to the statement by Kasheto Sema, President Dimapur Chamber of Commerce that appeared in the local press on August 23, demanding a public apology from him for terming businessmen who charged above fixed rates as extortionists. Further the DC said his speech at the August 21 meeting was a concern for the economically hard hit public of Dimapur who were made to pay prices above rates fixed. He said the rates were published time to time by the media and therefore, those indulging in such ‘unethical’ and ‘illegal’ practices amounting to extortion from public has to be stopped. The DC also said all those who attended the GBs meeting had also fully endorsed his stand against businessmen who overcharged public for various commodities. Stating that he was conscious of how the system was supposed to function so as to provide efficient services to the public, Maong Aier reiterated that the district administration would continue to serve the public through consensus of the public and civil society. He said the district administration would continue to ensure that the price index fixed by DCC and the administration was adhered by all and warned that stern action would be taken against defaulters.
