One lynched in rape, murder case

A non-local bamboo contractor identified as Sumonto Das (50) a resident of 2 ½ mile, Dimapur was lynched to death Sunday at Ralan, Wokha district, by an irate mob in connection with the gang rape and murder of a 30 year old woman identified as one Roshila Humtsoe of New Ralan, allegedly by some Muslim labourers Saturday afternoon. The dead body of the victim, who was married to one non local(Raju) was discovered at a place near New Ralan, Old Ralan and Chandalasung village junction. Sumonto was taken to Ralan for interrogation by the villagers on Sunday from his residence located at 2 ½ mile, Dimapur. The villagers had confronted Sumonto after learning that he provided refuge to two of the accused involved in the gangrape and then allowed them to flee on learning that the villagers were on their way to Dimapur. It was reported, that the villagers were infuriated with Sumonto and lynched him for alleged for complicity. The body of the victim was brought to East Police, Station Dimapur and handed over to relatives for burial. Police sources disclosed that two who fled were identified as Rokit Ali and Shajan, a labourer suspected to be the main accused. The rest of the labourers have been detained by the NAP personnel at Ralan post. Police said Rokit Ali went to the victim’s house and called her out on the pretext that her husband needed her help. Sources also disclosed that the labourers attempted to flee in a truck but were prevented when the victim’s brother seized the vehicle key. Those persons detained by the police were identified as one Raju (husband of the victim), Nadipur Rehman (25), Muhammad Rahmudri (35), Muhammad Faruk Ahmed (25), Opendar Oram, the driver of the truck and Josna Khan, the mother of Rokit Ali. All have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation. Meanwhile, the Kyong Hungjantaren Ekhung (KHE), Wokha has strongly condemned the alleged gangrape and murder of a 30-year old woman at Ralan area in Wokha district. KHE chairman Y. Likhao Humtsoe and general secretary, Dr Limhathung Jami through a statement has urged the district administration and police not to grant bail if the culprits were arrested but to take the sternest action.
