Strongly condemning the August 21 gangrape and murder case at New Ralan under Wokha district allegedly by some Muslim labourers, the Kyong Hoho (KH), Kyong Students’ Union (KSU) and Kyong Eloe Hoho (KEH) have demanded the district administration to find out the real culprits and award them befitting punishment. KH chairman, Yansathung Jami and joint secretary, Penathung Humtsoe in a representation to the deputy commissioner Wokha said it was confirmed that Lt. Roshila, wife of Raju (Muslim) was gang-raped and murdered on August 21 at New Ralan. Stating that such “inhuman act” cannot be tolerated as it was alien to the Naga society, the apex Kyong organization urged the authority to find out the real culprits involved in the incident and award the “highest punishment.” It warned to initiate its own course of befitting action if the government delayed in finding out the culprits. The KH also took strong exception to the shifting of the six suspects from Wokha police station to Kohima for security reasons as it felt that such transfer “reveals foul play and conspiracy.” To expedite the investigation process, the Hoho demanded immediate retransfer of the suspects to Wokha police station. It also said that appropriate ex-gratia should be given to the father of Lt. Roshila at the earliest. The Kyong Hoho pointed out that at no point of time had there been any restriction in individual liberty of marriage in terms of tribe, caste or religion in the Kyong community and as such, it expected respectable treatment from others. Vehemently condemning the incident, the Kyong Students Union (KSU) has asked the responsible authority to arrest the culprits at the earliest and award them the severest punishment. In a stern warning to the Muslim community in Wokha, the KSU said they must also own responsibility for the “heinous crime” and assist the authorities in nabbing the culprits failing which they should be ready to face the “rage and anger” of the Kyong community which would be cast upon them in the “most severe manner.” The students observed that the Muslims in Wokha had been time and again perpetuating atrocities on the Kyongs by way of rape, murder and even to the extent of carrying out conspiracies in order to create trouble and enmity among the Kyongs. The KSU noted that the latest incident at new Ralan had crossed all barriers of toleration against the Muslims and decided to work out a strategy to take its own course of action against the particular community so as to curb the “horrific” growing menace by an outsider against local community. The KSU president, N. Yiben Humtsoe in a statement said that the strategy would be worked out in consultation with various organizations and prominent individuals at the shortest possible time. Expressing “shock” over the incident, the Kyong Eloe Hoho (KEH) also strongly condemned the “heinous crime” and said it cannot tolerate the “beastly act.” KEH president, Zuchopeni Ezong and general secretary, Amongi Tsanglao in a joint statement urged the deputy commissioner Wokha, SDO (C) Ralan and the police to award befitting punishment to those involved in the crime. State JD (U) convenor, Mhonjan Lotha through a statement also demanded the government of Nagaland to immediately post border magistrates in Uriamghat and Merapani, EACs in Changpang, Aitepyong and Baghty under Bhandari sub-division for effective administration in the sensitive areas of Assam-Nagaland border. It may be mentioned that the body of Lt Roshila Humtsoe (30), married to a Muslim trader who went missing on August 21 evening was discovered nude in a jungle below New Ralan, Old Ralan and Chandalusung village junction, under Wokha district Saturday afternoon. Police, earlier said one Rokit Ali went to the victim’s house and called her out on the pretext that her husband needed her help. In connection with the incident, a non-local bamboo contractor identified as Sumonto Das (50) a resident of 2 ½ mile, Dimapur was lynched to death on Sunday at Ralan, by an irate mob after learning that he provided refuge to two of the accused involved in the gangrape and then allowed them to flee on learning that the villagers were on their way to Dimapur. Police sources disclosed that the two who fled were identified as Rokit Ali and Shajan, a labourer suspected to be the main accused. The rest of the labourers who were detained by the NAP personnel at Ralan post and then reportedly shifted to Kohima from Wokha police station were identified as one Raju (husband of the victim), Nadipur Rehman (25), Muhammad Rahmudri (35), Muhammad Faruk Ahmed (25), Opendar Oram, the driver of the truck and Josna Khan, the mother of Rokit Ali.
