A four-day workshop on Low Cost Teaching Aids for Trainers of Teachers (ToTs) got underway at the Red Cross Conference Hall, Kohima on Tuesday.
Speaking at the inaugural function as the chief guest, SCERT Director, Vipralhou Kesiezie said that Teaching Learning Materials (TLMs) was an important component for Teaching-Learning process and TLMs can supplement more meaningful and realistic teaching in classroom situation.
Kesiezie informed that the National Curriculum Framework, 2005 stipulates teaching to be linked to the child’s day to day life, adoption of activity base learning, enriching the child to learn beyond the prescribed text books curriculum and making examinations, assessments and evaluations more child friendly.
The SCERT Director also informed the participants that the recently passed Right to Education Bill has increased the number of working days as well as instructional hours for teachers in schools thereby providing sufficient time to make use of supplementary learning materials. He therefore asked the ToTs to develop and prepare TLMs through creativity and innovative ideas relevant to the teaching process.
Kesiezie urged the participants at the workshop to come out with a source book on TLMs after the conclusion of workshop adding that the schools can have a standardized list of TLMs of different subjects that can be used in classroom transactions.
In his presentation on the objective of the programme, Dr.Sarat Rout, Program Officer, IGNOU New Delhi said that new constructive approach based on the principle where teacher acts as a facilitator and the child is a natural learner should be adopted in classroom transaction.
Rout said some of the reasons for adoption of low cost TLMs is due to inadequate funds, problem of maintenance, training of teachers, lack of teacher-student involvement, provision of scientific base and most importantly to make teaching-learning more fascinating.
Resource person professor Harmesh Lal, former head Department of teaching aids, CIET, NCERT, New Delhi deliberated on how low cost materials can be used in Teaching Learning Process.
The programme is being organized by DEP-SSA IGNOU New Delhi in collaboration with DEP-SSA Nagaland.
