The Nagaland Gorkha Association (NGA) celebrated 64th Martyr’s Day of Major Durga Malla at Rotary Club, Midland, Dimapur on Tuesday with NGA president B B Gurung chairing the programme, who also hoisted the flag. The welcome speech was delivered by Information and Publicity secretary, NGA while the opening song was presented by the NGA members and district officials. A special homage was later given to Major Durga Malla. General secretary, NGA, Prakash Aley enlightened the gathering on the significance of the day while representatives from Kohima, Wokha, Tuensang, Mokokchung and Dimapur exhorted the gathering. The vote of thanks was delivered by welfare secretary, DGU. It may be noted that Major Durga Malla rose from the lower ranks and later joined the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose lead Azad Hind Fauj or the INA. He was in the intelligence wing of the INA when he was captured while on a mission at Ukhrul, Manipur by the British forces. From there he was deported to Delhi and was later hanged on August 25 at Delhi central Jail and thus became the first martyr from the Gorkha community. It may also be mentioned that the government of India after recognizing his sacrifices, has installed his statue at gate number 9 of the Indian Parliament.
