Imphal lawyers protest bomb attacks

Legal works in the lower courts in Manipur was paralyzed on Friday as lawyers suspended work and staged a protest decrying the bomb attacks at a court by miscreants on late Thursday evening. A petrol bomb hurled by some unknown persons exploded inside the Cheirap court complex located in the heart of Imphal city at around 7 pm. IRB men on duty at the complex said two youths on a motorcycle carried out the attacks. IRB men were also on duty at the main gate of the complex at the time of explosion. However, there were no reports of casualties. Decrying the bomb attack in the court, lawyers of lower courts gathered under the banner of the All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) staged a sit-in protest in front of the Cheirap Court Complex. The protest affected the working in the lowers courts as most of the case hearing had to be postponed for the day. “The attack is an assault to the judiciary. Everybody should condemn it”, the protestors said. The protestors also threatened to take up steps to suspend all work if attacks in the court working continued. According to them, the attacks on the court and judiciary were on the rise in the state during the last few months recounting instances of threat to the residences of the judges of the lower courts and in the construction works court complex at Chingmeirong, Imphal. Mention may be made that earlier lawyers had suspended their services for five days decrying the interference given in the construction work of the High Court Complex at Chingmeirong, Imphal.
