All Nagaland Kachari Students’ Union (ANKSU), Dimasa Youth Organisation, Nagaland (DYON), All Dimasa Students’ Union (N) and Garo Students’ Union Nagaland Zone have strongly condemned the alleged rape and murder of late Rinika Jigdong (14), a resident of Mohendujua at a brick field in Dimapur on August 25. In a joint press statement, the ANKSU president Gopinath Mech, DYON president Dharam Girisa, ADSU (N) president Ronjoy Jigdong and GSUNZ president Biplob Sangma said that union office bearers visited the site of the crime and confirmed that the father of the victim worked as “munshi” (supervisor) of the brick field, run by one Arvind Singh. The signatories said that according to the statement of victim’s father, the proprietor of the brick kiln had insisted that he should not file any in local police station or conduct postmortem but cremate the body as early as possible. Maintaining that this act only raised suspicions of foul play on the part of the proprietor, the union leaders said the helpless father of the victim then had to take the body to their native Mohondijua village, Karbi Anglong Assam for cremation. The four union leaders extended condolences to the bereaved family and also shared their grief. The unions have urged the police and local administration to book the culprits at the earliest and award “severest” punishment as per the law. They have also appealed to all the “right thinking” citizens and organizations to condemn such acts perpetrated on a minor girl.
