M’pur remembers freedom fighter Haipou Jadaunang

The 78th death anniversary of Zeliangrong freedom fighter and spiritual leader, Haipou Jaduannang was celebrated on Saturday in Manipur. Ritual offerings of sacred wine, prayers and hymns, paying floral tributes at Jaduannang`s memorial were the highlights of the state level observation function at Imphal, Major Khul. The gathering also observed two minutes silence in remembrance of the late leader. State education minister L Jayentakumar, chief guest at the function, in his address urged the people to work to fulfill Jaduannang’s dream. He also appealed to the youth to join wholeheartedly in the efforts to bring about development and strengthening the integrity of the state. “The spirit and ideology of Haipou Jadaunnang should be upheld by everyone,” the minister said adding that the state government was taking steps in strengthening the brotherhood that existed among the different communities residing both in hill and valley. President, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, Gaikhangam presided over the function, said, to follow Jadaunnang’s path followed and said that fulfilling his dream by today’s generation would be the true tribute for Jaduannang who sacrificed his life for the cause of the motherland. It can be mentioned that Haipou Jadaunnang was a ‘mystic freedom fighter’ who spiritually inspired in organizing religious and social reforms among kindred tribes of Zeme, Liangmei, Rongmei and Puimei. He was arrested and imprisoned at Tamenglong in December 1928 for mobilizing volunteers to drive out the British. He was wrongly implicated in a murder case and was executed at Imphal on August 29,1931. Haipou Jaduannang & Rani Gaidinliu death anniversary committee under Zeliangrong Union Tamenglong zone also organized the 78th death Anniversary of Haipou Jaduannang, with a grand celebration at Tamenglong. Khangthuanang Panmei Vice chairman HAC and Rev N Palmei former president of Zeliangrong Union Assam Manipur and Nagaland graced the function as chief guest and guest of honour respectively. A good number of people turned out in the morning and participated in paying floral tributes to the statue of Jaduannan at his birth place at Puilaun and at the memorial site of Jaduannan at Zeliangrong House in Tamenglong district headquarter.
