In the first ever ''human cadaver'' donation in Meghalaya, renowned artist Moinul Haque Barbhuiya donated his body to North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) before breathing his last at his residence here. In the medical institutes of India in general and those of the North-East in particular, there is a great shortage of human cadavers which are needed by the Anatomy Department of Medical Education for dissection purposes. Barbhuiya passed away on Wednesday after fighting a long battle with cancer. With Barbhuiya's noble example, Dr Bhattacharyya said more people should be encouraged to donate their organs or bodies to save others and to be of some help to mankind. ''He was committed to donate to the NEIGRIMS and his noble gesture was in the interest of the mankind,'' Barbhuiya's wife Prof Geeta Das said. ''Barbhuiya is a Muslim by faith, yet he did not allow his creed to overcome his personal mission to serve society even after his death,'' Prof BS Mipun, a close friend of Barbhuiya, stated.
