Miss Kerala Contest held under court supervision, even as members of Solidarity Movement in Kerala demanded a ban on such events, apprehending vulgarity and flesh trade. The entire contest was held under the watchful eyes of a five-member panel constituted by High Court of Kerala on a writ petition filed by People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), which said that girls aged below 18 years were participating in the contest and it promoted vulgarity. The Contest was held with fervor amid protests with glitterati thronging the event. Twenty-one contestants from different parts of the country participated in this contest. Apart from the first three titles of Miss Kerala and runner ups, there were eleven sub-titles, which were won. The sub-titles included: Miss Beautiful Hair, Miss Beautiful Skin, Miss Beautiful Eyes, Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Perfect Ten, Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality and Miss Talented. The winner of this year contest was Archana Nair from America. While interacting with the media, Nair said that she felt great after representing her heritage even though she came from America. "It is the proudest moment that I have in my life. That's all I can say," said Nair. Geethu Christie was adjudged the first runner-up and Bonnie Mary Mathew the second runner-up. Shalini James and Hari Anand designed the costumes for the contest while the show director was Sameer. Usha Utap, pop singer and the one of the judges of Miss Kerala 2009 Contest said that she felt terrible as the people were making a controversy for nothing at all. "I really feel terrible about this because why do you just want to make a controversy for nothing at all. I was there from the beginning to end. I thought it was beautifully managed. The girls were dressed very well. They walked very well, they spoke very well and there was absolutely nothing vulgar, "said Utap.
