Unidentified gunmen fired at a newspaper office in Manipur's Imphal West district last evening during curfew hours, but there was no casualty, police sources said today. The incident took place at around 7: 50 pm when four of the newspaper staff was working inside the office. A spokesman of the newspaper said the district senior superintendent of police arrived at the newspaper office to make an on the spot enquiry. The newspaper, he said, had not received any threat from any quarter and doubted whether any report had annoyed any individual or group. Since the incident took place, the journalists suspected the involvement of police behind the attack. "(We) journalists suspect the police commandos... We are fully supporting peace and national integration, why the security forces suspect the journalists?" said Imo Singh, a journalist. A group of journalists also called on state Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh to ensure safety of the media persons and organisations. "We are facing lot of pressure from many angles. So, we requested the chief minister to look into the security of newspaper offices," said Loya, another journalist. The chief minister has reportedly assured to enquire into the incident and given instructions to security personnel to safeguard journalists in the State. The police on its part, promised an in depth investigation behind the incident. No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.
