Deputy chairman, State Planning Board (SPB) Neiba Kronu yesterday shot off a letter to state chief minister, Neiphiu Rio and R&B minister asking them to approach the appropriate authority over maintenance and improvement of NH-150, the life line of the people of Phek, Pfutsero and Kiphire and also to take up the matter of a bridge that collapsed earlier. Neiba in the letter informed that he had already written a D.O letter to the Chief Engineer, BRO Vide No. DCSPB-1/PER/08 dated April 8, 2008 regarding maintenance/ improvement of NH-150 but alleged that his letter was not given due attention. He alleged that most stretches of the NH-150 were waterlogged with gaping, potholes and that there was no sign of construction of side drains which made driving both treacherous and dangerous. He also alleged that raw materials used by the BRO for the maintenance of NH-150 was of sub-standard quality thus disregarding the safety of the commuters. Neiba pointed that an under bridge which was under construction by the 15 BRTF on the RD Block Kikruma and Chakhabama collapsed on May 2, 2007 due to “poor workmanship” of the BRO. He said that the BRO had not taken any initiative to reconstruct the collapsed bridge even after a lapse of more than a year which was causing inconveniences to the public of the area and commuters alike. He warned that the public of the area were agitated because of the lackadaisical attitude of the BRO. The letter stated that Phek district legislators during the DPDB meeting held on July 30, 2009 had also seriously discussed the issue and was contemplating to file a court case against the BRO through appropriate agency. Neiba opined that it would be more appropriate if the R&B department took up the matter with the ministry of road transport and national highway, government of India. Given the circumstances that there was no response from the BRO despite repeated reminders and personal approaches by the R&B department, the SPB deputy chairman said that the BRO should once again be summoned to the cabinet for discussion and necessary action. He also suggested that the BRTF be instructed to speed up the construction of the bridge and to maintain/improve the NH 150 by using better quality raw materials.
