Yimchungrüs celebrate Metemneo

The post harvest festival of Yimchungrü tribe, Metemneo, was celebrated at Chumukedima in a simple yet impressive function. The programme was held at the residence of its treasurer with executive chairman, Yimchungrü Ariahko Council (YAC), T Müleki chairing the programme. The welcome speech was delivered by president, YAC, Z Z Yimchunger while Thrümkiumong exhorted the gathering. Former president of YAC, Torüpkiu gave a short speech on Metemneo while the vote of thanks was given by vice-president, YAC, Kitumong. Metemneo is a festival usually celebrated from August 4-8, after the harvest of millet so that first and fresh harvest is eaten during the festival. An elderly person known as ‘Kheamphuru’ after due prayer inaugurates the festival. The festival is spread over five days viz, Shito, Zhito, Zumto, Khehresuk and Sheresuk. This festival is also connected with prayers for those dear ones who left for their heavenly abode during the year. Earlier, the invocation was pronounced by pastor, YBC, Akhüm while benediction by women pastor, K Tsüsola. Meanwhile, in Kohima Yimchungrü Union celebrated Metumneo festival on Saturday at the residence of its treasurer with Parliamentary secretary Information and Public Relations, Economics and Statistics R. Tohanba was the chief guest. In his address he stressed on the importance of the festivals and the rich culture to be preserved. Tohanba said the present government was also paying importance to all Nagas festivals by organizing different varieties of programmes like road show exhibition, in order to promote the festivals and let the respective tribe/ community know the importance of the working of different departments in the state of Nagaland. He also said that the practices and observation of Metumneo festival showed the true and rich culture and the emerging point of Yimchungrü which was one of the major tribes of Nagaland Highlights of the programme included presentation of cultural songs by Yimchungrüi AkherüArih-Ako, Kohima and Yimchung Berü Cultural Club and short speech by Kekongchin, president ENPUK. Earlier welcome address was delivered by M. Yinkiu President, YUK and the significance of the Metumneo festival was delivered by T Achim. Invocation and benediction was pronounced by Longri Nungdi. Pastor YBCK and Y. Muremong, ex-deacon respectively. The vote of thanks was delivered by S. Kumtsu, member and the programme was chaired by T. Kiutsuthong.
