A cadre of the proscribed National Democratic Front of Bodoloand (NDFB) was arrested this morning from Krishna Nagar area in the heart of the state capital and an IED recovered from his possession. Additional Superintendent of Police Debajit Deuri informed that one Leela Basuatary was arrested and police suspected that the radical militant group was trying to enter Guwahati with an aim to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations. Yesterday, a railway official was kidnapped by NDFB militants from Dehkiajuli. A section engineer of Northeast Frontier Railway was abducted while he was supervising the construction of a bridge at Batasipara under Dhekiajuli police station in Assam’s Sonitpur district. Two suspected NDFB cadres whisked away Sanjay Kumar Lama when he was working at the site around noon, Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur, Surinder Kumar, said over phone. According to UNI report, the NDFB was showing resistance despite the reverses they had suffered, losing 64 of their cadres in the past two months. Notably, the NDFB has split and majority of the cadres are favouring talks and ceasefire from the designated camps. But a small number of radical NFDB cadres taking advantage of the growing resentment against the ruling class of the Bodoloand Territorial Council (BTC), Anjali Daimary of the Bodo Women Justice Forum said. Her brother Ranjan Daimary is the head of the radicals and as of now their writ runs everywhere in the Bodo areas, putting both the administrattors as well as pro-talks NDFB cadres on the defensive. “They have the guns and most of them are young and trigger-happy. So dangerous is the situation that I cannot go home,’’ said Pradeep Daimary of Kolia Moila of Baska district. He was a former militant who has now joined the mainstream. However, the resentment within the NDFB cadres is growing as the people want peace. In fact, two NDFB militants were lynched by a mob when they tried to kidnap a person from Hugraguly weekly market in Sonitpur district, police said. “But the NDFB is planning to strike big. As per the confession of the arrested militants, they were trying to blow off the Saraighat bridge. We are working round the clock to bust all their modules,’’ said Debajt Deuri, Additional SP of Guwahati city. A thick security blanket has been put around Guwahati city with constant intelligence inputs that the militants might try to cause damage before August 15.
