Curfew clamped to thwart protest rally in Imphal

The state administration clamped curfew in Imphal East and West as a rally was planned today to protest the fake encounters in the state. Working committee of Apunba Lup (WCAL) a conglomeration of NGOs of Manipur which was spearheading the stir and the Joint Action Committee against fake encounter incident of July 23 at Imphal market areas had called upon the people to organise a rally today. On July 23 at Khwairamband market a pregnant woman died and five others including two women were injured and later a youth was allegedly killed in an encounter by police. However, the photographs of the youth being arrested and dragged inside a pharmacy were published in a national magazine and local newspapers which provoked widespread protest against the alleged fake encounter. According to UNI report, to control the agitation, curfew was clamped in the districts from August 4 which was relaxed in the morning for the last four days. Considering the proposed rally, no relaxation was announced by the government. Streets were completely deserted and all educational institutes continue to be closed down since August 3. All inter and intra state passenger services continue to be cancelled. Regional Institute of Medical Sciences authorities said there was shortage of life saving drugs due to non-movement of vehicles and people were facing untold miseries. Chief Minister, O Ibobi had announced judicial enquiry and suspension of seven police personnel. However, the protestors were demanding resignation of the CM and termination of all police personnel involved in alleged fake encounters. 1 shot at A man identified as Gagan was shot late last night at Tharon Kabui village, Chingmeirong, Imphal west district by unknown armed persons. Police said the man was out of danger and the inquiry is giong on to nab the culprit. According to UNI report, a bomb exploded last night near the residence of Director of tribal development department, Solomon Zingkhai at Nagaram, Imphal East, police informed. Reishangmi, the driver of the Director sustained injuries in the blast and was undergoing treatment at RIMS, sources added.
