Deputy chairman state planning board Neiba Kronu has reiterated that the Sidzu bridge collapse was due to poor workmaship and use of substandard materials by the BRTF in the RCC works as detected by the Phek Town Committee on NH 150. Reacting to the rejoinder by Col. K.S. Maladi, C.O, 15 BRTF, Kronu pointed out that before construction of any bridge, the agency was bound to conduct soil testing for stability of the abutment/foundation and so designed that bridge structure was able to withstand the High Flood Velocity of flow of the particular stream/river and catchments area. Further, he pointed out the BRTF had not cast concrete base to support propping structures of scaffolding/shuttering as required but that the structures were simply wedged in ordinary soil that had no rock formation at the base. On the claim that the BRTF was designing a new bridge, Kronu asked how long does it take to do so as more than two years have elapsed since the collapse? He also refuted the claim that the BRTF was clearing the debris as it remains where it collapsed. On the plea of Col.Maladi that overload of vehicles besides other factors were responsible for the poor road condition, Kronu asked how much load was the NH 150 designed to carry?. He reminded the BRTF that all national highways were designed as per standard specifications Kronu also pointed out that the PTC/NGOs as well as state PWD had met the BRTF in Dimapur, Kohima, Chizami and Jessami on few occasions to offer help if needed while executing the works. However, the BRTF has not made any effort to liaise with them, Kronu said adding the “repeated requests” made to the PTC/NGO/PWD did not arise as claimed.
