The Board of Control for Cricket in India approved All Indian Football Federation’s demand of Rs 25 crore for its national team’s 2011 Asian Cup preparations, to give it over period of two years. The decision was taken by BCCI in its working committee meeting held at its headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday. The All India Football Federation approached cash-rich cricket board for financial assistance for the 2011 Asian Cup preparations. With little funds coming from corporate houses for the ‘Goal 2011 Project’, AIFF acting president Praful Patel was seeking help of his party chief Sharad Pawar to get financial assistance. However, AIFF acting president Praful Patel refused to confirm or deny that he had approached former Indian Cricket Board chief Sharad Pawar for financial assistance from the BCCI for the national football team’s preparations for the 2011 Asian Cup. Patel said the AIFF was looking for money from all available sources for its ‘Goal 2011 Project’ but dodged a specific question whether he had approached his NCP boss for help. India qualified for the January 2011 Asian Cup in Doha after winning the AFC Challenge Cup last year. Recently, the sports ministry had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the Indian football team’s Asian Games preparations. The ministry had also committed to bear a part of the cost for the ‘Goal 2011 Project’.
