Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) has renewed its demand for the resignation of Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Prof K Kanan on expiry of the 14 day ultimatum served by it. NUTA’s ultimatum called for revocation of illegal decisions taken at the 20th Executive Council meeting and demanded that the VC call for an Emergency EC meeting. As this has not happened, the NUTA has once again resolved to represent to the Visitor and MHRD for continuously violating statutes of University Acts by V-C. NUTA earlier had demanded Prof.Kannan’s immediate removal from the Chair to the Visitor, President of India, the Hon’ble Minister HRD Kapil Sibal, the Chief Rector, Governor of Nagaland, for various alleged violations and scams in the University. NUTA president Rosemary Dzuvichu and general secretary N Venuh revealed that through application of the RTI Act, it had detected more than 185 illegal accounts of Fixed Deposit by the University, amounting to more than Rs.500 crores in a certain Bank in Kohima besides recovery of documentary evidence of huge amounts kept in fixed deposits in other banks at Kohima. The release further stated that Prof. Kannan has refused to release Rs.1.60 crores, stipulated to be utilised within August 2009, meant for construction of an International Hostel and development of Laboratories in SASRD, Medziphema. It alleged that the VC had also refused to release Rs.9 lakh of research fund granted by the ICAR to the Department of Animal Production Management , SASRD for a piggery research project which not only lead to lapse of the grant but loss of valuable academic research too. NUTA claimed it has documentary proof that Prof. Kannan appointed himself the Principal Investigator of the Rs.109.45 crore Project on “DBT Mission for Quality Planting Material Productions and Utilisation” which was for researching and developing planting materials for Banana, Kiwi, Khasi Mandarin, Cashew nut, Big cardamom etc at SASRD, Medziphema. NUTA also alleged that the VIC had given his address as DC Court Junction, Dimapur, whereas he is stationed at Kohima. He also gave a false address of the Registrar of the University as DC Court Junction, Dimapur, when actually the office of the Registrar of the University is at Kohima. Taking note of all allegations, NUTA has appealed to the intellectuals and to all right thinking people of the State, to come forward and help in cleansing the University.
