The National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC) to provide free legal aid to the female inmates lodged in Shillong district jail. Today, NCW member Wansuk Syiem visited Shillong district jail and interacted with women’s inmates to get their first hand information about their condition. “I have directed the State Women’s Commission to provide legal aid to the women’s inmates for speedy disposal of their case,” Syiem told journalists. Most of the prisoners complained of inordinate delay in delivering justice on charges against them were that they could not afford to pay handsome amount charged by lawyers to pray for them in the court. Syiem, who will also visit other jails in other North Eastern states, assured the MSWC to provide necessary assistance. When asked on the living condition of the Women’s Cell, the NCW member refused to comment, but said she would her findings to the Commission for necessary action. The Women and Child Development ministry (WCD) too took cognizance of reports of irregularities in various jails asked the NCW to assess the situation of women inmates. Earlier, the Meghalaya government has initiated slew of measures to decongest the Shillong district jail, the oldest jail in the region following the May 31 Shillong jailbreak.
