Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang today expressed concerned on the alarming increase of crime against women in the state. “The crime rate in the state especially crime against women is alarming and appalling phenomenon,” Lapang said after releasing the Training & Resource Manual on Gender Sensitization and Video CD on Multi Sectoral Project on Crime Against Women. He said that the government is taking serious efforts to eliminate the menace of crime from the society. To overcome this problem, the Chief Minister called for concerted efforts needs to be made by both the government and the NGOs by working together especially in terms of creating awareness among the people. Lauding the efforts of the North East Network (NEN), a women frontline NGO for initiating the programme of gender sensitisation on crime against women, Lapang also assured active support from the state government to combat the social menace. He said that the Training and Resource Manual will serve as a capacity building tool to the Police personnel and also to the health care providers on gender sensitisation and also it will be a guide to the trainers and counselors to deal with the problem. Lapang also hoped that the training manual will go a long way in educating the people, and especially the police personnel about the crime against women and to be aware on how to tackle such problems.
