After having opened a University for tribals in Manipur, a special study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNUO) will also be opened in Manipur with a special package for the economically and educationally backward classes, officials of Manipur State Minorities Commission said on Friday. A proposal for establishment of the study centre requested by the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU has been accepted by the chairperson of the Manipur State Minorities Commission, the official added. The commission has selected to open the centre at Lilong Haoreibi College in Thoubal district dominated by Muslims as identified by the Sashar Committee after a brief survey was conducted. The centre is to be established with special package for minority Muslim girls at Lilong Haoreibi College, the official said adding that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the principal of the college and the IGNOU Regional Director will be signed after having an awareness programme. The commission is planning to conduct the awareness programme on September 28 at the premises of Haoreibi College. All information including various prospects of the centre will be highlighted by eminent resource persons on the occasion. As the centre is specially meant for the educationally backward Muslim girls, the commission has to draw special attention of the general public and appealed to all the academicians belonging to minority Muslim community of the state to attend the awareness programme and share knowledge with the commission. Manipur had recently opened a regional centre of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) fulfilling a long cherished dream of the tribals of Manipur of having a separate higher study centre with enough seats to enroll the increasing tribal students. Manipur chief minister, O Ibobi Singh inaugurated the university at its temporary place in Imphal with a function held on September 9 last.
