A militant from ULFA’s 28 battalion on Tuesday surrendered before the BSF at its Assam-Meghalaya frontier headquarters here with arms and ammunition. The self-styled Lance Corporal, Manav Handique, surrendered after the BSF persuaded him to come over ground from NSCN (K)’s 2nd battalion training camp in Myanmar. Handique surrendered with a 7.65 mm pistol, a magazine with five rounds, two hand grenades and 21 assorted ammunitions. Handique, from Sarupabhajan village in Assam’s Golaghat district, said he was tired with his life as a militant and wanted to join the mainstream and lead a normal life. “My health was deteriorating in the camp as the health care and food is poor and so I wanted to come over ground and join the mainstream,” Handique said after laying down arms before Inspector General of BSF, Prithvi Raj. He added there are about 500 ULFA and NSCN (K) militants in the training camp in Myanmar. “None of the top leaders ever visited the camp during my stay at the camp,” he said. Meanwhile, the BSF said its intelligence unit after long negotiations and persuasion made Handique lay down arms.
