The police authorities of Sonitpur district of Assam, unable to control the habitual drinking of a section of their staff have started a unique way to take on the problem. According to a UNI report, the Superintendent of Police Surendra Kumar ordered a mandatory ‘’Kirtans’’ for all these errant policemen in the Namghar (religious meeting place) every evening after the work. ‘’We had adopted some hard punishment but we did not get the desired results and this time we are adopting this noble method. I am confident that it will have desired results, the SP said. On some occasion, he and other top brass of the district police themselves attended the session along with the errant ranks. ‘’Tomorrow they will be grateful to us for this, Mr Kumar said, as he has decided to eliminate the ‘’drinking policemen bad behaviour’’ image of the state police in his districts. The Assam Police rank and file are notorious in misbehaving with the common members of the public after a binge at night. So every evening in the Namghar near the SP office, the ranks and file of the Assam Police attend these religoius meet and growing peace has given some relief to the overburdened policemen to reinvent themselves.
