Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang said that the demand of Congress legislators to strip of Urban Affairs portfolio from lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), MLA Paul Lyngdoh will need the approval of the Congress high command. Several Shillong-based constituencies Congress legislators had demanded stripping of the Urban Affairs portfolio from Paul for various alleged irregularities. The irregularities include leasing of parking lots, collection of parking fees, leasing out of Shillong Municipal Board, inordinate shifting of garbage dumping ground and amongst others. “The demand of the Congress MLAs to strip the Urban Affairs portfolio from Paul will be brief to the AICC leaders,” Lapang told journalists. The Chief Minister said that he cannot take a unilateral decision on this issue since KHNAM extending support to the Meghalaya United Alliance coalition government was approved by the Congress high command. The Chief Minister is scheduled to leave for New Delhi on October 6. “We are very unhappy with the style of functioning of Paul and we want the Chief Minister to remove the Urban Affairs portfolio from him,” Congress legislator Founder Strong Cajee said. The Congress legislators wanted that the Urban Affairs portfolio should be allotted to Congress legislators M Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is also a cabinet minister in the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance coalition government. However, Paul has termed the demand of the Congress legislators for stripping the Urban Affairs portfolio from him as “politically motivated”.
