Tension prevailed at Bhimajuli Balichang area of northern Assam’s Sonitpur district today, even as preparations for the mass cremation of the 12 victims’ bodies sobered simmering communal sentiments. Meanwhile, the security forces launched a massive manhunt to nab the militants responsible for the Sunday night massacre. Sporadic incidents of staging road blockades and throwing stones at passing vehicles were reported from across the state. However, the bandh failed to restrain the people of adjoining villages of the massacre site from joining in the grief of the victims families as hundreds participated in the cremation, reported UNI. Ten bodies that were kept at the Tezpur Civil Hospital were taken to a mass funeral site on the banks of a pond at Balichang area this afternoon while those of the two victims’ who succumbed in Guwahati, were expected to arrive by evening. Security at the cremation site was tightened, apprehending trouble by the aggrieved villagers who had attacked the state Director General of Polices convoy and set ablaze an additional magistrates car yesterday. Four visiting ministers were also forced to retreat yesterday. Meanwhile, army presence dominated the area with helicopters also being pressed into service to help trace the militants, local reports said, though no official confirmation was received yet. Meanwhile, normal life was disrupted in several districts of Assam today following a 12-hour state-wide bandh called by several organisations to protest against the killing.
