Naxalites for the first time ever specifically targetted women and children in Jharkhand, 50 kilimetres from state capital Ranchi. They attacked the house of an alleged police informer. The Union Home Ministry responded with a propaganda offensive. CNN-IBN has learnt that a major joint operation against the Naxals will be launched by Central Security Forces along with state police in Bihar and Jharkhand in the next few weeks. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is flying to Patna next week to review the operational strategy which has already been chalked out. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jharkhand R K Mullick said, “Maoists and their high profile leaders need to answer this question that in which rule, section or core of their fight does it say a 12-year-old girl, a 22-year-woman and a 16-year-old boy, a student, should be brutally killed? This belongs to which section of their Maoist ideology?” In Bundu village, at the funeral, there was a sense of despair and fear of more violence. A resident of the village, Rajesh Patar said, “Whatever has happened is not good for our Bundu region. Militant activities have increased here and due to that there is unemployment as well.” Everywhere across the country, including in Bundu village where Naxalites have flourished, the Government has failed to win the hearts and minds of the villagers. Now it remains to be seen whether armed action can solve the Naxalite problem.
