Md. Sporting, Air India win IFA Shield opener

: The 114th IFA Shield kicked off today with victories for Mohammedan Sporting and Air India against Lajong FC and Pune FC respectively. Mohammedan Sporting made a winning start to their IFA Shield campaign with a 1-0 victory against new boys Lajong FC from Shillong. Seasoned striker Dipendu Biswas put his team in the lead in the 14th minute after a brilliant assist from Eduardo da Silva Escobar, while in the second half Edu could have doubled his teams lead, but his penalty was saved by Gumpe Rime in the Lajong goal. In the other match, Pune FC conceded an early goal as N. D. Opara put Air India ahead in the ninth minute. Arata Izumi equalised for Pune FC just after half-time but Air India restored the lead in the 54th minute through a Ravinder Singh penalty. Chika Wali was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty box after a shot by N. D. Opara and the referee showed no hesitation in awarding the penalty to Air India.
