Emmanuel Adebayor smashed his third goal in three games to keep up Manchester City’s unbeaten run. Togo striker Adebayor, signed for £25million from Arsenal this summer, headed home Gareth Barry’s 30th-minute corner. City’s victory condemned struggling Portsmouth to their fourth straight defeat. The South Coast club’s new owner Sulaiman Al Fahim was at Fratton Park for the first time since his long-winded takeover was completed. He was sporting his side’s new away kit and in a similar scenes to when Mike Ashley bought Newcastle, he evened sat with Pompey supporters in the second half. The faithful fans will hope their side does not go the same way as the Magpies who suffered relegation last season. But on this form, they will have a huge battle on their hands. Despite Frederic Piquionne testing Shay Given early on, City were soon on top. Carlos Tevez fired just wide with a free-kick before Pompey keeper Asmir Begovic was lucky to get away with fumbling a free kick. Adebayor’s opener was as easy as they come. Barry, who was sublime in midfield, curled an inch-perfect corner for the striker to powerfully head home. City should have been two up at the break when Micah Richards fired home Craig Bellamy’s cross. But the right-back was wrongly judged to be offside by the linesman despite being a couple of yards behind the nearest defender. After the turnaround, Pompey showed some battling spirit and new signing Michael Brown, making his debut, had the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out for handball. Adebayor went close again before Richards was forced off with a knee injury. Craig Bellamy, Carlos Tevez and Adebayor continued to give Portsmouth problems at the back. But they could not kill off the game and Pompey could have even stole a point had sub David Nugent managed to fire past Given with his first touch.
