Bus driver shot dead by unidentified men

Normal movement along the Imphal- Churachandpur section of the NH-150 was disturbed on Wednesday as irate drivers of buses on this route launched a strike decrying the shooting of one of their colleagues by suspected militants on Tuesday evening. The driver identified as Ngashepam Ngongo alias Basanta (28) son of Mani of Nambol Thangtek was shot inside the driver’s cabin in front of the passengers, Tuesday evening at about 5.30 pm. The militants stepped in into the bus which stopped to pick up passengers at Phoubakchao Bazar and shot the driver on the head at a point blank range. The driver heading to Churachandpur from Imphal succumbed to bullet injury at the spot. None of the militant outfits have so far claimed responsibility for the killing even though police suspect PULF cadres who had recently attacked another passenger bus. Drivers of buses playing along the Imphal-Churachandpur section of the NH-150 suspended passenger service, demanding the arrest of the culprits involved in the shooting at the earliest. The drivers are also demanding appropriate security measures along the route to prevent repetition of such incident in future. The driver community in a statement dispatched on Wednesday demanded clarification from militant groups and called upon bus drivers serving on various routes to extend support in pressing the government in booking the culprits. The dead body of the driver is keeping at RIMS morgue, Imphal.
