U-14 Cup holders Nagaland meet Army Boys

Defending champions’ State under-14 team will start their title defense against last year semifinalist Army Boys in the opening match in the Subroto Cup tournament which begins October 6, while State under-17 will lock horn with Meghalaya on the same day. The tournament will be played at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium, Delhi. Both the teams will be leaving for the tournament on October 1. The tournament begins on October 6 and the final will be played on October 25. It may be recalled that in last year edition, State under-14 defeated Bangladesh 2-0 in the final match to lift the title, while state under-17 failed to qualify for the quarterfinal. According to state under-17 coach, Mughato the final selection of players list in both the categories will be announced on September 22. The state under-17 will be lead by Mughaho as coach and deputy director Youth Resources and Sports, Shihokhe as team manager, while state under-14 will be led by Kevilibe as coach and PIS Kohima, Thepfuredi as team manager. Subroto Cup football tournament is an inter school tournament in India. The tournament was named after Indian Air Force Marshal, Subroto Mukherjee. Subroto Mukherjee conceived the idea of launching the tournament in 1958 when he was the Air Chief Marshal. The first tournament was held in 1960 only for under-17 category. Nagaland for the first time took part in 1967 and had the distinction of winning in 1980 and was runners-up on six occasions (1967, 1968, 1981, 1984, 1985 and 2004). With the number of increasing school taking part in the tournament, the organizers started the under-14 category, in 1998 after the request from the Sports Federation of India. And thus Nagaland under-14 became the champions in 2008. In 2008 the winning team state under-14 was led by state football coach, Mughato as coach and M. Yanthan as team manager.
