Citing possibilities of “gross discrimination and gender insensitivity” over the discharge of 20 trainees of the state’s 1st Mahila Battalion (15 NAP) on health grounds, after it conducted preliminary inquiry into the issue, the Nagaland Women Commission (NWC) has written to the DGP Nagaland saying that the police department should “perhaps” immediately keep in abeyance the discharge order. Stating that the discharged recruits has no means of income to support themselves during the ‘traumatic period,’ the NWC said they should be called back to the Battalion and rejoin their training course till the case was settled. The Commission said it was in receipt of a complaint letter from one of the aggrieved recruits and had also conducted a preliminary inquiry and obtained the statements of some of the aggrieved constables in the presence of its legal consultants. The NWC said it would submit report with observations and recommendations to the government after obtaining all official documents. It also said that the department should immediately constitute a committee of medical specialist and physicians to conduct an independent test for all those who have been discharged. The NWC declared it would take up the case with earnest.
