The Border Security Force personnel fired three rounds into the air to disperse Bangladeshi intruders in Meghalaya’s Rongkhum River, BSF official said today On Friday night, scores of Bangladeshi nationals intruded into the Rongkhum River with boats and collected boulders from the river bed. “Our men fired three rounds in the air after the Bangladeshi nationals refused to stop collecting boulders,” BSF Spokesman Ravi Gandhi said. The BSF personnel also seized a boat used by the Bangladeshi nationals for ferrying the boulders collected from the river near Amdoh village in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills district. He said BSF troops of Assam & Meghalaya Frontier have intensified operations on Indo-Bangladesh border to check trans-border movement and anti-India activities across the border. Early this week, hundreds of boatmen from Bangladesh with the back up of Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB) intruded the Umngot River, which bordered with India. The border villagers have also expressed concern on the failure of New Delhi not taking the matter seriously or investigate the Bangladesh boatmen intrusion. The Assembly of Hynniewtrep Nation has urged the Centre and Meghalaya government to conduct an immediate inquiry into the incident so to ensure that such incidents do not occur again and to restore the confidence of the people living along the Indo-Bangla border areas.
