As many as 12 taxi drivers have been booked in connection with the explosion that rocked the Aizawl Congress Bhavan recently. Police sources here today said H Lalliansanga, leader of Khatla Taxi Stand Welfare Committee, eight other members of the committee and three members of Temple Square Taxi Stand Welfare Committee were booked under Section 436 of IPC and R/W of Explosive Substance Act. They would be remanded in the police custody for another 48 hours, he added. According to UNI report, immediately after the blast on September 17, police rounded up as many as 73 members of Zoram Taxi Drivers Association, which had been agitating in protest against the government order that the citys taxis be off the roads for alternate two days to ease traffic jams. They were conditionally released yesterday except 12 if them. The blast, triggered by sticks of gelatin, did not cause major damage to the building. Action was takne againt cabbies after state Home Minister R Lalzirliana hinted that the taxi drivers were suspected for the blast. ''Intelligent inputs suggested that some of the agitating taxi drivers planned to attack the Congress Bhavan,'' Mr Lalzirliana said on September 18. The Home Ministers remarks shocked the Zoram Taxi Drivers Association (ZTDA), the ZTDA said in a statement. ''The ZTDA has found it hard to believe that some of our members had an intent to resort to such extreme step. If they were, as the Home Minister alleged, the association would not defend them,'' the statement added.
