You think you have deleted that intimate photo and secret document. But actually, it's still there on your hard-drive, waiting to be exploited by hackers. "Even if you have deleted things from folders -- even from the recycle bin -- the data remains on the computer. It takes just a few minutes to retrieve," says cyber crime expert Vijay Mukhi, who trains cops at Mumbai Police's cyber crime cell. "There are times when the data can be recalled a few years later from your computer despite being deleted by you. In mobile phones too, pictures can be retrieved even though they are no longer in the image gallery." According to Mukhi, preying cyber criminals used this expertise to blackmail Anoushka Shankar. Earlier, actresses Asin, Riya Sen and Shamita Shetty had a bad time when their ID's were hacked. While there is little you can do to stave off expert hackers, there is a solution for safeguarding your data. "There are some free tools available on the internet which deletes data completely and forever. You should always give your mobile or laptop to an authorized service center so that if it happens to be misused, it is easy for the police to figure out who did it," adds Mukhi. Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee says he's got his own safety measures in place. "I keep very little data on the hard disk of my computer. It is generally stored in the form of an artwork, just like they did in the old days," he laughs. Actor Suniel Shetty advises extreme caution. "It's your life and when something happens, it's you who suffers. While you need to trust people, at the same you need to know who is accessing your data." Arjun Rampal agrees. "It's always better to have top secret data in a hard disk and not the laptop. For the mobile, take the memory card (where you store your images) out whenever you are giving it out for servicing."
