Many patients suffering from viral fever, typhoid and malaria had to be turned away since the 50-bedded Civil Hospital Mon is already is so overcrowded that the hospital authorities have had to accommodate two patients in cabins that were meant only for one patient. The situation has become desperate that the hospital authorities had to discharge patients who were either just recovering or showing no signs of improvement so as to make room for many others in critical condition. Doctors and staff at Mon civil hospital are doing their best and unless the situation improved, the situation could take a turn for the worse. One of the factors that has led to overcrowding in the Mon civil hospital stems from the fact that doctors posted to the primary health or community health centres were not in station or that no doctors were posted in the PHC/CHC. To add to the growing problem, the 50-bedded hospital has only 18 nurses who are being over burdened with the task of having to look after a growing number of patients. The capacity of the hospital should have been doubled, in view of increasing number of patients particularly with regard to births. Mon district has the highest number of birth rate but the hospital is without a Gynaecologist. Expectant mothers have to be referred to a private clinic at Sonari, a sub-division of Sivasagar, 60 kms away from Mon town. Although the central government has a policy of providing adequate health care for expectant mothers at government hospitals, the Civil Hospital Mon cannot take the risk due to absence of a Gynaecologist. The only Gynaecologist posted to Mon in the beginning of the current year has not reported but is still in Mokokchung. It was also learnt that the matron, who was transferred few months back and supposed to be in-charge of the nurses, is yet to report for duty at the hospital. Also, a Dentist posted to Mon has been attacked with the Naga Hospital Kohima. Over and above, the hospital (CHM) does not have a general lab technician or equipments. It was also learnt that the hospital was faced with shortage of medicines since September last. Presently no medicines are available in the hospital.
