Rio asks VDBs to provide correct census

Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio Thursday called upon Village Development Boards (VDB) under Kohima district to provide accurate VDB household population so as to prepare a precise census in 2011. He said that it was time the Nagas embraced honesty and changed their attitude. Addressing the Kohima District VDB conference 2009 at IG Stadium, Rio said that there were many “grass-root” corruption and urged the people to come back to the right track and practice honesty. He pointed out that 2001 population had shown excessively high population for which there had been many problems. Asserting that an accurate census can lead to progressive planning, Rio urged public leaders, churches, politicians for their contribution. Rio also asked the VDB members to maintain transparency and accountability, and also practice participatory governance while implementing and approving programmes. The chief minister further stated that VDB was a reflection of the customs and tradition of the forefathers, and urged the gathering to prove to others goodness and honesty. He appraised the gathering that VDB system in Nagaland was followed by Central Government in the form of Panchayati Raj system in the rest of the states. He asserted that though backward, the good community work in Nagaland should be continued. With 82% of the Naga population living in villages, the chief minister said government was doing its best to upgrade the level of villages in order to uplift the whole society. He pointed out that present government was backing the villagers through various programmes such as backward fund, reservation policy, communitization, etc. Guest of honour for the programme, S.Pangnyu Phom, parliamentary secretary RD, REPA and SIRD, said that the district wise VDB conference was being conducted to check the needs and plight of the VDBs. Phom stated that the vision of VDB was to bring town set up in the villages, and asserted that proper utilization of funds would lead to making the vision a reality. Minister for Forests, M.C. Konyak, who also spoke during the occasion, stated that VDB was an important institution in Naga society. He stated that it was the economical, educational, political, developmental foundation of the Naga society. Terming VDB as a mini village government, Konyak urged the village leaders to show the real meaning of development through their works.
