The much awaited seventh round of conference between the Karbi radical organization – United Democratic People’s Solidarity (UPDS) – and Union government would commence at New Delhi from Friday. Before leaving Diphu for New Delhi, the UPDS leaders today expressed optimism over the outcome of this particular round of talk. The seventh round of talk assumes special significance after the union home minister P Chidambaram’s assurance to resolve UPDS impasse within a stipulated period of one hundred days as per the new complete surrender policy of militants by the central government. A close source within the UPDS said that the charter of demands which the outfit was going to place before the Centre was likely to include granting of an interim council under new name Karbi Anglong Territorial Council with forty five government departments adding fifteen new departments to the existing thirty under the control of KAAC by the concerned authority and a tentatively large monetary package. After a long period of ceasefire between Central and DHD (N), eight Rounds of talk have already taken place between this particular ultra organization and the Union government without much progress till now. With regard to the new dictum of the Union government, the DHD (N) has already deposited their arms under the Double Locker system as pre- condition of peace process along with the hundred day formula of Chidamboram.
