Alert security guards on Saturday foiled an attempt of jailbreak at Tura in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district. At least, eight jail inmates attempted to flee from the jail this afternoon, while they were taken out of the enclosure to collect firewood from the jail premises. “The inmates had overpowered the security guards to flee, but their attempt was averted after the ring leader Jamsing Sangma was hit by a bullet on his leg from a guard at the watchtower,” West Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police, Dalton P Marak said. Uttam D Sangma, one among the eight prisoners, attempted to commit suicide with a knife after failing to accomplish the jailbreak mission. Both the injured inmates have been admitted at Tura civil hospital, even as security was further tightened at the jail after the incident.
