2 PLA killed, security men hurt in gunfight in Manipur

In a clash between rebels and security forces at two separate places in Manipur on Tuesday, two suspected PLA cadres were killed and two security men wounded including a major, according to police. The clash occurred at a forest area of Salungpham and Marryland villages at the border between Thoubal and Ukhrul districts of Manipur. The clash erupted between a combined force of Assam Rifles, Para Rifles and Thoubal police commandos and a group of well arm cadres of PLA, police said. A major of the Para Rifles identified as Karki sustained injury at the leg. Another rifleman of the same trooper was hurt at the stomach. His condition was stated to be serious. The fatality on both sides may have been much more, according to police sources. The combined force entered to the area Tuesday morning at around 8 am based on specific information. A group of PLA cadres with sophisticated weapons was camping in the forest area located between Salungpham and Marryland villages. The gunfight started at around 1 pm and after around one hour of gunfight, rebels made managed to escape from the site taking advantage of the thick forest. Further search operation wason till late this afternoon. Another gunfight between CRPF and some unknown rebels took place at Kotlien along the NH-53 in Tamenglong district early this morning at about 3 am, police report said. However, no casualties were reported in the gunfight which lasted for about 20 minutes. However, troops of CRPF recovered an AK-56 rifles from the clash site which was abandoned by the rebels, the report added.
