Funeral service of a 19-year-old Naga girl– Ramchanphy Hongray – who was molested and murdered October 24 in Munirka, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, was conducted in Ukhrul district, Manipur Tuesday. Hundreds of mourners attended the service while many Naga organizations and different students’ body from different parts of India conveyed their condolences. Tangkhul Shinao Long president strongly condemned the murder and urged the public and leaders to take up the matter immediately. Sources said bereaved family members were unhappy about the delay of post mortem report. Judicial custody A city court Tuesday sent a 34-year-old PhD scholar of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, held for the murder, to 14 days judicial custody. Metropolitan Magistrate Saurabh Singh sent Pushpum Sinha to judicial custody for allegedly killing his 19-year-old neighbour, Ramchanphy Hongray. Agatha reacts: Two days after the gruesome murder of a Naga teenager in the national capital, a Union minister from the north-east has lashed out at the attitude of the general Delhiite towards women from the region. Speaking to Headlines Today, Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha Sangma said incidents of women from the north east being molested in Delhi has been quite rampant. The situation in Delhi has been disgraceful, she said. “We desperately need a more cooperative police and administration. What is also needed urgently is sensitising of the police so that people from the north east feel a part of the system,” the minister said. Condemnations Rajya Sabha MP: Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland Khekiho Zhimomi describing the incident as yet another act of “racism and regional discrimination” said the “perpetrator”, Pushpam Sinha, who was stated to be suffering from “obsessive compulsive disorder”, was a “mild excuse” to be active to commit such “heinous crime of barbaric order.” While noting that India was frontrunner against racial discrimination world over, Zhimomi said it was obligatory for union government to activate all its machineries at the highest level to curb and abort such anti national elements once and for all. “The recent instances of lackadaisical attitude of the reputed Delhi police when insisted for help, calls for stern uniform discipline where administrative monopoly of the top brass is inevitable,” the Rajya Sabha MP pointed out. He was of the view that in order to depress occurrence of such “racial abuses” the court should set aside special panel to deal the case with stern hands and award exemplary punishment within the preview to avoid bail provisions. NSF: Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) general secretary O Wati Jamir said the action of miscreant was beyond “human conception”. The NSF urged upon responsible authority to contemplate for protection and security of NE people in national capital. It also demanded law enforcing agency to book the culprit – Pushpam Sinha – according to the law. nwum: Naga Women Union, Manipur (NWUM)) expressing “deep shock” over the “racially discriminated murdered” of Ramchangphy Hongray cautioned that any attempt by Delhi police to address “this kind of serialized racist murder” as isolated case would undermine the already “unhealed wound” of North East communities. “The systematic pattern of racist attack, sexual harassment, rape and murder is the hard truth,” the NWUM president Grace Shatsang said. tsl: Tangkhul Shanao Long (Tangkhul Women League) expressed displeasure in the manner Delhi police was trying to divert the issues as “isolated case” instead of immediate mechanism to stop the nature of “serial racist attack”. “We are not interested in knowing the character of the monster but we want justice for the innocent Miss Ramchangphy Hongray,” the TSL president AS Dinah and general secretary Ys. Praising said in a statement. Meanwhile, North East Support Centre & Helpline (NESC&H) today appealed to Union government, Delhi government and particularly Delhi police to setup special cell to address the issue and provide safety to the community concerned as earliest possible.
