The Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) has accused the Central as well as the State Government of not doing enough to bring about a political solution to the “KLNLF dilemma.” KLNLF publicity secretary in-charge, Rajak Dera said over phone that the problem was not about crisis of unemployment but a socio-economic and cultural problem of the Karbis and added that it was a question of political existence of their people. Dera said they would bid farewell to arms if the government politically brings the KLNLF impasse to an end. “A dignified way of laying down arms will not be a hurdle in the peace process if government and political parties act sincerely,” he added. Talking about the ultimatum issued by the KLNLF on targeting the Hindi speaking people and carrying out subversive activities, he said the organization had maintained total peace since April 16 in anticipation of positive response from the government. He however rued that quarter has so far taken any practical or result oriented initiative to bring peace to the Karbi nationhood. Dera said that the question of disarming the KLNLF should be viewed from other points also, since other outfits like the NDFB, ULFA and some underground militant groups might create law and order problem by dominating the Karbis in their own land as most of the other ultra groups were still proactive in the region. He said that the whole crisis should be viewed from a wide angle before forcing any hasty solution. Dera emphasized on the need for a close liaison between the decision making authority of the Union and State Government and KLNLF to bring about an enduring solution. He said KLNLF had so far done its best by going out of its way to project the picture that they really wanted a peaceful solution to their pending issues rather than opting for hostility. Dera said that the ball was now in the court of the Union Government and the political parties who were at the helm of affairs/power to set the issue in proper direction. It may be mentioned that the KLNLF recently warned the ruling Congress of possible untoward happenings in the wake of non-fulfillment of its 10-point charter of demands which was placed before all the major political houses, specially the ruling clique ahead of the last general election. In a SMS message to the media, Major Thong Teron on behalf of the KLNLF said that although the ruling Congress promised to resolve the 10-point charter of demands, political leaders like local MP, HAD minister of Assam and the CEM after coming into power have done nothing substantial to redress the issues raised by the KLNLF leadership. Major Teron while issuing stern warning to the Congress leaders for their failure to respond positively to the demands placed by the KLNLF, mentioned that his organization should not be held responsible if any unpleasant incident took place in the near future.
